Highlands Bird and Nature Club - Birding in Ethiopia, the Roof of Africa

Monday, May 11, 2026 (7:00 PM - 9:00 PM) (EDT)

Description

Jim Nix will be presenting "Birding in Ethiopia, the Roof of Africa.” at the Highlands Bird and Nature Club on Monday, May 11 at 7 pm at The Highland Center

Ethiopia has spectacular mountain scenery with a wide range of habitats home to a great many bird and mammal species. It is a beautiful and culturally interesting country but, with poverty and limited tourist infrastructure, attracts few international visitors. Ethiopia is, however, a paradise for birders with a great diversity of species, very few of which occur in the U.S. or anywhere in the Americas. And, with lots of open country, birds and mammals are relatively easy to observe.

Originally from New York City, Jim has lived in Charlottesville since 1970.  He is a mechanical engineer retired from a federal career as an intelligence analyst that provided many opportunities for international travel.  He has been an avid birder since around 1980 and between business and personal travel has now visited more than forty countries, some on organized birding tours to destinations in Latin America, Southeast Asia and now Africa.  Going where the birds are in rural parts of developing nations affords opportunities for interaction with local people and exposure to culture that is generally missed by tourists and is a major feature of these tours.
